{Make} A Bag Sew Along: Introduction

by Kelly on May 25, 2010

in Sewing, Tutorials, {Make} A Bag Sew Along

Hello good lookin’ people! Today is Week One of the {Make} A Bag Sew Along. I was tempted to name it {Make} A Bag With All The Bells & Whistles Sew Along, because that’s really what we’re making here! Over the next 8 weeks we’re going to make not only a bag, but a bunch of accessories to go with it. And not only that, I’ll show you how to do it with one charm pack and a bit of fabric. You could also choose to make this a scrap-buster project, by making your own charm pack from your scraps. Sounds good, huh? Here’s an example of what we’ll be making:

Bag and Accessories

I have changed some of the projects slightly though, to make them more user-friendly. :)

{UPDATED: 19 Aug 10} Here is the whole set now completed!

Bag and Accessories

The tutorials will be easy to follow, so if you’re a beginner sewer you can join in too! And remember, I’ll be here to answer any questions you may have. Generally these would be about the project but if you would like to ask me why the sky is blue or if they really gave Mr. Ed peanut butter to make him look like he was talking, that would be ok too.

Here’s a breakdown of the schedule (these will turn into links once they become available):

Week One – Gather Your Supplies

Week Two – {Make} A Bag – Part One

Week Three – {Make} A Bag – Part Two

Week Four – Toiletries Pouch

Week Five – Mini Makeup Roll

Week Six – Sunglasses Case

Week Seven – Bits and Pieces Pouch

Week Eight – Keyring Decoration/Zipper Pull

And here are other related links:

Questions and Answers

Would you like to join in on the fun? I’d love if you sewed along, but I don’t mind if you start out with great intentions and end up doing a watch along! Please leave a comment and let me know you’re out there!

If you like, you can also add a button to your blog. I’ve made some spiffy ones for you!

Hi,
Just wanting to let you all know I’ve just written a post about the stiff interfacing and how Timtex/Peltex are not actually a good substitute.
Please have a look before you go shopping. :)

I am all over this sew-a-long. I have such a backstock of fabric (just like everyone I’m sure) that I always jump at a chance to make bags. Great idea!

Hi Susan, I’m afraid you’ve caught me out there! I’m actually nearly 378 months old…but shhh! Don’t tell anyone. A girl’s allowed to lie a little about her age, isn’t she? ;)

As for your button question, I’ve added some tips to the questions and answers post.

Hi Tess,
I fixed your link so that it works now. (You’d accidentally typed your address in twice.

Basically, to add a button to your blogspot blog, you want to add a HTML/Javascript gadget on your Layout page. I’ve written a bit of a how to on the Questions and Answers post.

Really? You mean it? These are “beginner friendly”???? They certainly don’t look it, but ya know what… I’m jumping in! LOL I’ve made totes, but I have a “fear of zippers” LOL
(because I’ve never sewn one for one! LOL) But this sounds great! I wanna play.
and I’m a new follower.

45 Kelly flag May 30, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Hi Jeanette!
Yes, I do think beginners would find these projects easy enough. They are fairly straightforward. I added some clarification to the term “Beginners” to the Questions and Answers.

The zip I’ll be doing is the easiest way to insert a zip. Doing it this way, you’ll have no need to fear them any longer!
